1936`s summer witnessed one of the most famous sportive events: the Berlin Olympic Games. The Games were used as a smokescreen in order to hide the beginning of the construction of the first concentration camp: Sachsenhausen.
This terrifying institution was one of the principal concentration camps administrative center and was under NS-supervision until April 1945. Approximately 200.000 detainees were imprisoned in the camp - a great many of them did not survive holocaust. As soon as World War II was over, Sachsenhausen camp was taken by the Soviets who used its remains for a special prisoner’s camp until May 1950.
In 1961 the German Democratic Republic changed the site into a memorial that was transferred to a joint foundation after reunification. The former concentration camp nowadays hosts a memorial with exhibitions on various topics related its history.
